Write and illustrate a picture-book, guided by South African illustrator Piet Grobler. Be inspired by the setting and the inhabitants of the lovely Greek island of Lesbos to create that story that you have been hoping to tell for a long time!

Day 1 Chance: Happy accidents, experimental image making, collecting stuff and idea generation in the streets of Lesbos
Day 2 A sense of place: Observation-drawing in the outdoors
Day 3 Characters looking for stories: Drawing people and animals from observation in town or in the countryside
Day 4 Plot it: Conceptualising your story with the information you have gathered and create a story board.
Day 5 Illustrate! Show-and-tell, feedback and practical illustration by using analogue (non-digital or traditional) hand- techniques and mediums
Day 6 Illustrate more! Show-and-tell, feedback and practical illustration by using analogue (non-digital or traditional) hand-techniques and mediums
Day 7 Show and tell: (public?)Exhibition and story-telling of the week’s work

Piet Grobler has illustrated 80 books of which many have been awarded internationally – amongst others, a Golden Apple at the Biennale for Illustration in Bratislava and the French Octogône de Chéne. His work has been translated into 16 languages. Piet has served on several international juries for picture book illustration competitions for example the BIB (Bratislava) and the Chen Bochui- award in China. He is a full-time freelancer and Visiting Professor at the University of Worcester, UK, where he taught for eight years.


Tariffs include accommodation, two meals per day and course fee; travel excluded.
