Writing crime fiction is one of the most exciting projects a writer can undertake. The characters are larger than life, the plot hums and the action comes thick and fast.

This workshops aims to help both beginner and practising crime fiction writers get to grips with the genre and the essentials of writing fast-paced stories. The emphasis is on the practical, examining what the crime novel demands of story, plot, characters, and dialogue.

The first session will provide a background to the various sub-categories within the genre – be it hard-boiled, cosy, PI, police procedural, gangster, or psychological thriller. The following sessions will focus on developing a crime story and credible characters, the necessity of devoting effort to a solid plot, developing suspense, composing the irresistible kick-start chapter, and writing dialogue.

By the end of the week you should have a plot and a first chapter that will launch your story.
